Baotou Iron & Steel 1#2# CDQ cogeneration Project

Baotou Iron & Steel Group Co.,Ltd.(hereafter referred as BISCO ) intends to build two sets of coke dry quenching system (CDQ); in coordination with the 5#~8# coke ovens ,which will replace existing coke wet quenching process (CWQ). The CDQ system will recover waste heat from red-hot coke and utilize the sensible heat for electricity generation. The generated electricity will be used to meet the company’s power need in its daily production, displacing the electricity that are mainly purchased by BISCO from the North China Grid and are partly generated by BISCO’s captive power plant. The CWQ will be reserved as the backup system once the construction of CDQ system is completed. Since there is currently no relevant regulation obliging the Iron & Steel companies to replace CWQ system with CDQ in China, in absence of such project, BISCO would continue using the original CWQ system and the sensible heat could not be recovered and utilized in electricity generation.

The proposed project will adopt Japan Nippon Steel Corporation CDQ technology, which uses inert gases to reclaim sensible heat from the coke quenching process. In the steam-water heat exchanging process, steam will be produced in the CDQ boilers, then entering the turbine for electricity generation. The project is anticipated to generate an amount of electricity of 166.74 GWh annually, which will replace the equivalent amount of electricity from the North China Power Grid, therefore reducing the GHG emissions generated from the fossil-fuel-dominated North China grid. The expected emission reductions from this project are about 152,024 tCO2e.

BISCO  plans to use CDQ technology instead of CWQ process in the production line of No.5 and 6,No.7 and 8 coke ovens and the recovered heat will be used for electricity generation instead of coal-fired power, thus avoiding CO2 emissions from the fossil fuel-fired power plants connected into the North China Grid.

This project has been registered at the United Nations CDM Executive Board (EB) in November 8, 2007.It is the first CDM project registered successfully by CERIeco and the second CDQ project which was registered at EB, and the project owner is also the fourth iron and steel enterprise in China who registered the CDM project at EB.
